  • Transportation at OKC

We recently went to Oklahoma City for a few days on vacation. We got to OKC at about 11:30pm and went to the car rental center. No cars were available. At all. We were also told that Uber is not allowed on OKC property and the ONE taxi service that was allowed only serviced air crews. So everybody who landed there were stuck there unless they took the car rental shuttle to the rental center where Uber WAS allowed. WTF??? I'll NEVER return to Oklahoma City. EVER!

Thats pretty screwed up. I have read where TSA and the like are ramping back up. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Don't know why they call it Hamburger Helper, stuff does just fine by itself........

That sounds really weird. I would think you could call any taxi service and have them pick you up just like if a friend was picking you up.
That being said I live in OKC so don't even fly in and out or haven't in years and last time used off airport parking to leave my truck as that way I got dropped off at the terminal and picked up.
If I'd have known you were in town I'd have come picked you up and taken care of you.

Back before I quit flying, I flew into and out of a lot of different airports and cities. It was pretty common around larger cities to find the taxi service limited in a variety of ways. Usually, it was a matter of which taxi company had the money to bribe their way into an exclusive service contract with the airport. One more reason to despise transportation unions.

When the required bribe was larger than any one taxi company could swing, then it really got weird. Arriving taxi's wouldn't be allowed to accept passengers leaving the airport and taxi's picking up at the airport wouldn't be allowed to take riders TO the airport. In both situations, you had to pay an additional "fee" to cover the taxi's deadhead run back to where it could pick up the next paying customer... and that was about the simplest combination you might find.

I remember once having to get a taxi from the harbor to the bus terminal, so I could catch a bus to the airport. Busses weren't allowed in the harbor area and taxi's weren't allowed at the airport. I think that might have been in Italy though, about 50 years ago.

A trick I've used a few times was to ride a hotel shuttle from the airport to a large hotel, get a meal in their restaurant, then grab a taxi to where I was going in town. I never had much use for airplane food and airport food was just as bad, in addition to being more expensive than eating in the restaurant.

Heard it was nuts in Maui. Some people went to the local U-Haul dealer and got a moving van!

I might be back if Oklahoma softball makes it to the World Series. My girlfriend's daughter is a coach for UO. They are now 39 - 1 and ranked number 1 so they have a good chance of making it. If we go I'll let you know. I'd love to meet you! Thanks.
